International Conference Whale and Dolphin Watching: On 27th and 28th of February 2007 the Peruvian NGO Mundo Azul and the Humane Society International hosted the International Conference “Whale and Dolphin Watching: An Opportunity for Sustainable Coastal Development and Conservation” in the Double Tree El Pardo Hotel in Lima, Peru, as part of the project “Dolphin Conservation in Peru”. The conference counted with the participation of about 30 national and international speakers from Peruvian and US-Government, tourism and fisheries sector, as well as international and national scientists and conservationists. The conference counted with the participation of some of the most prestigious specialists on whale and dolphin watching on a global level such as Dr. Carol Carlson and Brigit Winning, President of the Oceanic Society. “I believe it is fair to say,” says Stefan Austermühle, Executive Director of Mundo Azul, “that never before in South America it has been possible to get together a group of specialists on cetacean conservation and whale watching with such a big combined expertise as we managed to do in this international conference, in order to push for the development of sustainable marine dolphin- and whale watching tourism. This sustainable industry has a great potential to offer an economic alternative to illegal dolphin killing for human consumption and to become a great tool for sustainable coastal development and marine conservation. It is a great honor for Mundo Azul that we were able to help setting up this international mega-event of cetacean conservation on a South American level in cooperation with the Humane Society International.” It is of great importance to us to make the conference materials and speeches available to a global audience.
