The Project Conservation of Dolphins in Peru

The Conference “Whale and Dolphin Watching: An Opportunity for Sustainable Coastal Development and Conservation” forms part of the Project “Dolphin Conservation in Peru” being implemented by Mundo Azul and the Humane Society International. The project counts with funding from the US-State Department within the framework of the Free Trade negotiations Peru-US and was also cofunded in its first phase by the Peruvian Tourism board PromPeru.

The main goals of the project are:

  1. Strengthen the implementation of laws for the conservation of cetaceans in Peru.
  2. Promoting dolphin and whale watching as an economic alternative for artisan fishermen and an opportunity for sustainable economic development along the Peruvian coast.

 

The special objectives of the Project are:

Goal 1: Strengthen the implementation of laws for the conservation of cetaceans in Peru

Goal 2: Promoting dolphin and whale watching as an economic alternative for artisan fishermen and an opportunity for sustainable economic development along the Peruvian coast.

  • Implementation of three national workshops with local and regional stakeholders from the governmental sector, fishing and tourism industry. (Implemented in April 2006 with the participation of a total of 140 local stakeholders)
  • Implementation of the Conference “Whale and Dolphin Watching: An Opportunity for Sustainable Coastal Development and Conservation”
