Conservation Status:

• Protected by the whaling moratorium of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) since 1985;
• Listed in Annex 1 (threatened species) of the International Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES);
• Listed in Annex C1 (strictly protected) of Regulation 3626/82 of the European Union;
• Protected by the US Marine Mammals Protection Act (MMPA) and declared a "diminished species" (a species whose population is smaller than it should be in order to be considered healthy);
• Listed as an "endangered species" by the Endangered Species Act of the United States of America (ESA);
• Listed as "vulnerable" by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN);
• Protected in Peru since 1977.
  

Distribution in Peru:	Historic threats:
All year around along the northern coast of Peru.	Whaling (between1951 and 1976 in Peru: 1,108 whales)

Present threats:

Illegal whaling by Japanese whalers; Aboriginal whaling in Greenland; So called "scientific whaling" by Japanese whalers; Contamination with heavy metals in the Mediterranean.
