Conservation Status:

  • Protected by the whaling moratorium of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) since 1985;
  • Listed in Annex 1 (threatened species) of the International Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) (opposed by Japan and Norway)
  • Listed in Annex C1 (strictly protected) of Regulation 3626/82 of the European Union;
  • Protected by the US Marine Mammals Protection Act (MMPA)
  • Listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a species of which "insufficient information" is available;
  • Protected in Peru since 1985.
Distribution in Peru:
Historic threats:

Unknown. In 1993, two young whales where caught as by-catch off Pucusana.

Whaling.


Present threats:
  • So called "scientific whaling" by Japanese whalers
